Nestled in Petersburg, Virginia, a historic bus station that served as a center for civil rights protests is now a restaurant and cigar lounge that pays homage to its past while serving customers. The old Trailways Bus Station, which opened in 1946 and was a segregated building until 1960. That same Trailways Station has since been restored and reopened as the Griffin Lounge, a modern coffee shop that intentionally preserves the building’s complicated history.

It developed into one of the earliest Black communities in the United States, long before the Civil War reshaped the nation. By the early 1800s, the area had become Virginia’s first largely free Black settlement, where families built homes, participated in river commerce, and created a community that existed alongside white residents.
