Camp Tiger Empowers Kids with Disabilities in Shreveport

By: Ark-La-Tex Staff Writer

LSU Health Shreveport medical students are once again hosting their annual Camp Tiger, a free, week‑long day camp for children and teens living with physical and cognitive disabilities. Running from June 2 to June 6, 2025, this marks the program’s 25th year of providing an inclusive, joyful experience in the Shreveport‑Bossier community.

Who Attends?

Camp Tiger welcomes youth ages 5–18, or up to 22, with diagnoses ranging from cystic fibrosis and Down syndrome to cerebral palsy and autism.

Organized by Future Doctors

This initiative is driven by first‑ and second‑year medical students at LSU Health Shreveport. They carefully plan daily activities, ensuring each one is adapted and inclusive, emphasizing fun, safety, and personal engagement.

Highlights of the Week

Campers enjoyed a vibrant lineup of community-based events and adventures, including:

  • Skating at Hot Wheels of Wonder
  • Engaging in hands-on exhibits at Sci-Port Discovery Center
  • Bowling at Holiday Lanes
  • Meeting animals at Gators and Friends
  • Touring Barksdale Air Force Base
  • and much more.

Impact and Support

Camp Tiger not only provides memorable experiences but also fosters social growth, hands‑on learning, and meaningful bonds between campers and future physicians. With approximately $600 needed per camper, the organizers rely on donations from events such as Clays for Camp Tiger, a Chili Cook‑Off, and Camp Tiger in Concert.

What’s Next?

Planning for Camp Tiger 2026 will begin soon. Interested families can apply early, spaces fill quickly. Those who want to help can donate or volunteer through LSU Health Shreveport’s Student Philanthropy programs, ensuring the camp remains a transformative experience for years to come.

Bottom line

Camp Tiger continues to be a shining example of community, compassion, and innovation. Under the leadership of LSU Health Shreveport’s medical students, it brings joy and empowerment to children with disabilities, and fosters future physicians who understand the value of connection, empathy, and inclusion.
